When do I need a First Aid/CPR certified person?

An adult with current First Aid and CPR certification is required for most Girl Scout activities. Check Safety-Wise for individual activity checkpoints. The American Red Cross is the primary provider of first aid training in our council but see Safety-Wise, p.37 for other acceptable courses.

What courses are required?

Standard First Aid and CPR training will provide you with First Aid and adult/child CPR certification. This meets the Safety-Wise requirement for activities requiring a Level I first-aider.

There are times when Level II training is required. Read the specific activity checkpoints, chapters 7-11 in Safety-Wise, for the level of first-aider required.

How often do I need to update my certification?

American Red Cross First Aid certification is current for 3 years from the date of completion. American Red Cross CPR certification is good for one year. Other organizations may differ in certification length. You may also take a challenge test for American Red Cross First Aid and for CPR if your certifications are about to expire.

What should I do if I can’t afford First Aid/CPR Training?

If your troop cannot participate in an activity because an adult in the troop cannot afford the cost of the course, financial assistance is available. Obtain an Adult Assistance Form from the council office. Upon completion of the course, send a copy of your certification and receipt to the Volunteer Services Director. You may be reimbursed up to 50% of the cost of the course, not including the cost of the book. Books are available at the Girl Scout Service Center for you to borrow. Partial and full scholarships are also available from the American Red Cross.
